A Teacher is like a Strong Sunflower

My Yoga class has just finished. My students are still awaking from their final relaxation. Blankets on their knees, eyes adjusting to the light. I ask them if they have questions, but see in their eyes, they are not there yet. So I tell them to take their time, no need to have any. If any, they can always ask me later. For now enjoy the feeling of relaxation.

Slowly, some more movement in the class.

I step out of the studio to give them some space to wake up properly and adjust their clothing.

A New Students’ Experience

One of the students pops out and leaves with warm wishes. A new student walks up to me and even feels the buzz of the relaxation while talking. She loved it so much! Wants to know more about me, loved the affirmation at the end. She feels so good and is so excited! She had no idea she could feel like this after a Yoga class.

Happiness and Joy Exchange

My heart is happy. I feel the happiness inside her, her enthusiasm and the recognition that my Yoga classes are appreciated. It lifts me up, gives me energy. Two new students and they both love to join my classes! How wonderful is this to inspire others into Yoga! And very important to have guided someone onto the path of Yoga through my Yoga class. As a bad experience can set people off of, never trying Yoga ever again.

Students and Teacher Roles are Interchangeable

During Yoga class I help with the alignments, I observe my students. Check where they have tension. Ask for input. What would they like to work on? Any special requests? We do it all together. We all are the teachers and the students. Helping to improve together. I love it, I enjoy it and feel uplifted after class. Whereas before class I am sometimes as well busy with the rush of the day, during class we fall into this other state of mind or consciousness, where there is only the rhytym of our breathing and our heartbeats.

Field of Beautiful Individuality

Walking around, totally aware, observing the students, without judgement. As the flowers they are, all equal, but each with their individual petals and colours, lovely!

Improving each on their own speed, celebrating steps they make and keeping in touch with certain parts of their inner world if they want to share. It is an ungoing flow of water, a movement wherein we all go with the stream. Each with their own body, but all connected on the same frequency.

Be like a Strong Sunflower

Breathing is the key which helps to stay in the here and now. Open to receive anything that might ask attention. Adjusting to the pace of students and their energy levels. Being like a strong sunflower in the wind. Up with its head toward the sun, a strong and healthy stem and strong roots rooted into the ground. The best possible inner basis when in contact with others, either teaching or supporting them. Being a support, as in not wanting to do it for them, but being the support to support them in the process.

The small things do Matter

Teaching is magic. Each time is different, every day is different, every class is different. The little things matter. These make it into the special experience that is unique for me, for you. Opening up more and more, showing qualities and talents in the process of giving and taking.

I hope to inspire many more students into Yoga. Confident that people that appreciate my way of teaching will keep on coming and find me. As much as I appreciate the students coming to me. They chose my studio, out of all the other tens and tens of schools here in Rotterdam.

They chose me, I am proud!
